Mexican War records, 1846-1890.

Files contain both original records of Illinois volunteers who served in the Mexican War and copies of muster rolls filed with the federal government. Copies of federal muster rolls were made pursuant to an 1881 General Assembly act which provided for their transportation. Original muster rolls are filed by brigade, while federal muster rolls are grouped by county. Muster roll entries include soldier name; rank, age, date, enrollment place and term (i.e., War with Mexico); person who enrolled soldier; last pay date; paymaster name; discharge date; discharge travel allowance amount; subsistence allowance amount; horse and horse equipment valuations. Files also include company morning reports; monthly strength returns; list of Illinois soldiers who served in the U.S. Regulars 14th and 16th Infantry Regiments; list of 2d Illinois Infantry Regiment soldiers killed, wounded, or missing in action at the Battle of Buena Vista; and correspondence (until 1890) concerning commission, election, and service records.
